“Words alone are certain good”, said W.B. Yeats, and
certainly there must have been a kitchen table in the back of his mind when he
wrote that.
Everything in Ireland, it seems, is resolved at the kitchen table.
With good friends in, the tea or the whiskey flowing, everyone at their ease,
that’s when the memories, stories, songs and truths come out into the light.
Old wounds are salved, new jokes paraded, friends new and old have their
characters held up to the light for good or ill, and underlying all is a
profound belief that the right words are always needed — the apt turn of phrase,
the exact right description, something retrieved from the dark of memory in a
bright sentence that stirs or lifts the imagination.
We believe in words, we
invest in words, we make the world new, over and over, in the gift of words.
Len, Jack and Theo, in their different ways, are masters of the word, and a
night around their table is a night where poems and songs and stories are woven
together in the magical web of language at its best.
And, of course, the tunes are only
